The AI-revolution is changing the way we work. This comes with some exciting developments and, at the same time, concerns about negative side effects of our dependence on digital tools in the workplace.

The Dutch Whistleblowers Authority notices that using those digital tools can have meaningful and impactful effects on integrity in labour organisations. It’s hard to think about workflows without the use of digital applications nowadays, which underlines the importance for employers, managers and compliance officers to be aware of the integrity risks in the digital domain.

In our brochure ‘Integrity in the digital workplace’, we provide insights and practical tools for employers and integrity professionals to update your organisation’s integrity management and policies in the face of rapid digital developments.

Some insights:

  1. Provide clear frameworks and a clear vision for integrity in the digital workplace: communicate clearly which rules and expectations apply to the use of digital technologies, record management’s vision on digital integrity in the integrity policy and include a description of digital conduct with integrity in your organisation’s code of conduct.
  2. Establish risk management and compliance frameworks: conduct a risk assessment for the use of digital technologies, focusing on role-specific risks and the impact of AI. Ensure transparency and accountability regarding the use of digital technologies and take account of legislation and regulations such as the AI Act to avoid fines and reputational damage.
  3. Minimise AI use in HR processes and, if used, ensure that this is subject to human review and assessment. Review AI-driven decisions and avoid excessive monitoring of employees.
  4. Invest in knowledge and expertise by offering AI literacy training. Create an open reporting culture by taking signals seriously.
  5. Evaluate and aim for continuous improvement by using a plan-do-check-act cycle, communicating openly about mistakes and lessons learned and regularly evaluating digital tools for reliability, explainability and fitness for purpose.
